Mato Grosso Map

A map of Mato Grosso, showing where it is in Brazil

Mato Grosso borders Bolivia and was originally a much larger state but split in the 1980s. The acclaimed biodiversity of the region attracts a lot of tourists. The original inhabitants of this area are the Bororo people, who fought off various European invaders over history. Despite this conflict and diseases brought by the europeans, the Bororo people stayed strong. The state has an average elevation of 3000 feet as part of the Mato Grosso plateau. This incorporates waterfalls, canyons and magnificent grazing lands recognised world over. As such, agriculture is a major part of the economy.
