58BC - Roman Empire in France begins as Julius Caesar conquers Gaul

600AD - Territory is named France as the Roman Empire ends and the Franks take over

1066AD - William of Normandy becomes King of England

1305 - The Pope moves to Avignon for a period of time

1337 to 1453 - The Hundred Year War occurs between France and England. Mainly due to claims over the French crown

1756 to 1783AD - A turbulent time overseas for France as all colonial possessions were lost in the 7 year war prior to 1763. France then helped the USA gain independence from England

1804AD - Napoleon was declared Emperor of France

1815AD - Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo

1889AD - The Eiffel Tower is built

1914 to 1918AD - World War I occurs, causing huge casualties

1939 to 1945AD - World War II occurs, much of France is occupied by German forces

1958AD - President Charles de Gaulle forms the fifth French republic

1992AD - France ratifies the Maastricht Treaty forming the European Union and creating the Euro currency
