Welsh Tales from the Mabinogion:
The Tale of Peredur, the Son of Evrawc

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a nobleman named Evrawc. Evrawc had seven sons, and the youngest was named Peredur. When Evrawc died, Peredur's mother took him to a hidden valley, far away from knights and battles, to keep him safe. She didn’t want Peredur to become a knight like his brothers, who had all died in combat.

Peredur grew up in the valley, not knowing anything about knights or battles. One day, while he was out walking, he saw a group of knights riding by. Their shiny armor and noble bearing fascinated him. He ran to his mother and asked her who those splendid men were. His mother explained that they were knights, but she warned him that becoming a knight was dangerous.

Despite his mother's warnings, Peredur decided he wanted to be a knight. He took a wooden stick and a makeshift shield and set off on his journey. As he traveled, he encountered many adventures.

The first person he met was a knight named Owain, who taught Peredur how to ride a horse and use real weapons. Peredur learned quickly and became very skilled. He continued his journey and soon came to the castle of a wise old woman. She recognized his potential and gave him further training in the ways of chivalry and combat.

Peredur then went to King Arthur’s court, where he met many other knights. At the court, he learned about the evil Red Knight who had stolen King Arthur's cup. Peredur vowed to retrieve the cup and set off on his quest.

On his journey, Peredur faced many challenges. He fought fierce battles and encountered magical beings. One day, he came to a beautiful castle where he met a maiden named Angharad. Angharad was very kind to Peredur, and he fell in love with her. She gave him a token of her affection, and Peredur promised to return to her.

Continuing his quest, Peredur arrived at a dark and mysterious castle. Inside, he saw a strange sight: a wounded man lying on a couch, with a spear beside him. No one explained the meaning of this sight, but Peredur was deeply moved and vowed to find out more.

As he journeyed on, Peredur learned from various wise people that the wounded man was the Fisher King, who could only be healed by a pure and noble knight. Peredur realized that it was his destiny to heal the Fisher King.

Peredur continued his adventures, fighting evil knights and monsters, always seeking wisdom and guidance. Finally, he returned to the Fisher King's castle. Using the knowledge he had gained, Peredur was able to heal the Fisher King, ending the curse that had caused so much suffering.

Having completed his quest, Peredur returned to King Arthur’s court as a hero. He was celebrated for his bravery and kindness. Peredur then went back to the beautiful castle and married Angharad. They lived happily ever after, and Peredur's name was remembered as one of the greatest knights of the land.
