Timeline
1587 - The first English settlement is established in North America
1606 - England’s King James I splits the East Coast into two halves gifting the North to the Plymouth Company and South to the London (Virginia Company)
1607 - The London Company reaches Chesapeake Bay, sailing inland and founding Jamestown
1616 - After some lean years, settlers learn to grow tobacco to financially support themselves
1619 - The first slaves arrive in North America
1620 to 1630 - Puritan pilgrims move to the United States, forming Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. Each varied with level of religious freedom.
1632 - Maryland is created, relying on tobacco plantations and labour to prosper financially
1664 - New York state is formed. It is a highly multicultural area with Scandinavians, Dutch and German people among others
1680 - the formation of Pennsylvania, an egalitarian and rich area populated by European migrants
1690 - Carolina, as one single state is formed. The north is farmed by individuals scrabbling for a living. The South contains large plantations.
1700 - European and African population in North America reaches 250,000
1729 - Carolina splits into North and South
1732 - The state of Georgia is formed
1775 - European and African population in North America reaches 2.5 million
1775 - The American Revolution or War of Independence begins
1776 - United States Congress announces independence from the United Kingdom
1783 - The American Revolution or War of Independence ends
1787 - The United States Constitution comes into effect
1800 - People begin to move West over the Appalachian Mountains
1803 - President Thomas Jefferson agrees the Louisiana Purchase where 530 million acres of lands is purchased from France for $15 million
1846 - Oregon becomes part of the United States
1853 - The Gadsden Purchase means that the USA grows to its current size
1861 - The American Civil War begins
1865 - The American Civil War ends
1917 - The United States of America enters World War One
1920 - Women are granted the right to vote
1929 - The Great Depression begins as the Stock Market crashes
1941 - The United States of America enters World War Two
1945 - World War Two ends as the USA drops two nuclear bombs on Japan
1950 to 1953 - The USA plays a role in the Korean War
1954 to 1968 - The civil rights movement is at its peak as people fight to end racism and segregation
1955 to 1975 - The United States of America plays a role in the Vietnam War
1969 - The United States of America successfully lands a man on the Moon
