KidZone:  Canada Day Creative Writing Prompts

Introduction:

These Canada Day creative writing prompts are a fun way to get excited about Canada's birthday.  Each worksheet provides a different inspiration to help spark a child's creative writing.

Printable Templates:

Word Wall Words:

Print four Canada Day word wall words and use one of the words in a sentence.

 


Draw and Write - 1:

Write a story and draw a picture inspired by the writing prompt:
 
"A funny thing happened on Canada Day!"
 
You may wish to provide additional Lined Paper.

 


Informational Writing - 1:

First, Next, Then, Last

Use these words to create an informational writing short manual.

"What you need for a picnic"

 


Writing Prompt 1:
(non-fiction reporting)

"If I were the prime minister of Canada, I would..."

Distribute the worksheet and encourage the children to complete the Canada Day story.

 


Writing Prompt 2:
(journaling)

"If I could fly, I would..."

Although they don't have to write about everything, encourage the children to consider their five senses before they start their journal entry:

- how things look (tops of trees)
- how things feel (wind beneath your wings)
- how things sound (other birds in the sky)
- how things taste (worms)
- how things smell (crisp air)

 


Writing Prompt 3:
(story sparks)

"I am proud to be Canadian because..."

Distribute the story spark worksheet and encourage the children to complete the Canada Day story.
